New to the world of yoga? Let’s learn together!

While the origin of yoga goes back thousands of years, its combination of meditation, stretching, and exercise has seen a resurgence in recent years as participants seek a respite from fast-paced, screen-dominated lifestyles. Yoga has options for all skill levels and all ages with a variety of methods to tone up, calm down, or simply stretch out.

For those not familiar with yoga, the word itself often conjures up complicated stretches or intricate poses. In reality, yoga is quite simple and offers a host of positive health benefits!

●      Physical Health and Strength: Yoga improves strength, mobility, and balance. Unlike traditional workouts that isolate muscle groups, yoga engages the whole body. Even beginner yogis will see increased blood circulation, improved cardiovascular health, and a better supported immune system. As skill levels increase, yoga aids digestion and detoxification. Yoga poses are plentiful! From plank to warrior pose to tree pose and more, each hold offers a moment to build core strength and joint stability.

●      Mental Clarity and Stress Reduction: In addition to its physical side, yoga offers a meditative side. With a focus on mindful breathing and thought awareness, participants often learn to self-soothe their nervous system. Yoga has been shown to reduce cortisol (a stress hormone), reduce anxiety, and improve sleep.

●      Emotional Resilience and Mindfulness: Yoga encourages introspection, something that has become less common with so many distractions vying for our attention. The simple act of rolling out one’s yoga mat quickly creates a Pavlovian response as yogis prepare for a peaceful session. Yoga’s focus on mindfulness promotes observation in lieu of reaction–something many find useful in everyday life.

●      Connection and Community: Residents of Ryan’s Crossing already enjoy a tight-knit community, and the yoga pavilion will increase it! Seasoned yogis are incredibly welcoming and enthusiastic to create a shared experience for all. Not quite ready for yoga with a group? Create a connection with yourself by enjoying a quiet, solo session.

Getting started is easy! The biggest yoga hurdle for many is simply getting started. Yoga offers endless flexibility as new participants soon find fancy gear, or a deep knowledge is not required.

●      Start with a simplified goal: Start with just fifteen minutes for that first session and work up from there! Yoga is more about consistency than duration, which makes starting with shorter sessions ideal.

●      Keep your equipment simple, too: No need to shop for a whole new wardrobe, balancing blocks, or even a fancy yoga mat. Comfort is key in yoga, so wear something that makes you feel good while also allowing movement. A few towels laid out on top of each other is a great alternative to a yoga mat–the perfect way to take a few test runs.

●      What’s your style? There are several families of yoga that allow participants to pick their preferred exercise style.

○      Hatha: Hatha is perfect for beginners as it is paced slowly and focuses on yoga’s foundations.

○      Vinyasa: For an emphasis on fluid movements linked to specific breathing patterns, Vinyasa is ideal.

○      Yin: Relaxation and long, deep stretches are at the heart of Yin-centered yoga.

○      Restorative: Feeling stressed? Restorative yoga focuses on stress relief and recovery.

○      Power Yoga: For those who don’t think yoga is a workout, Power Yoga may change your mind! This strength-based style includes a faster pacegreat for building muscle while improving cardio.

●      Digital Yogis: Discovering the basics of yoga is easy! YouTube has several yoga channels, and there are several free phone apps available that offer step-by-step guidance.

When the plans were laid out for the Ryan’s Crossing custom-home community, it was with an emphasis on connecting with its surrounding natural beauty. The yoga pavilion offers residents a full sensory experience that includes the warmth of the sun, a refreshing breeze, the sound of birds chirping, and the scent of clean, untouched air.

●      Practicing yoga outdoors draws participants to pay attention to nature as eyes are instantly drawn to the swaying leaves above.

●      Study after study shows that time spent outdoors benefits both the mind and the mood. Sunlight is a known antidepressant, and fresh air has rejuvenating characteristics.

No matter where you sit in your yoga journey, it is important to note that your body and your journey belongs to you. Listen to your body and modify any moves that cause pain. Remember that your range of motion is as unique as you are. Yoga is not about perfection or matching skill sets with those around you. Yoga is about the individual, personal goals, and a custom-made experience.
