As new residents settle into their gorgeous, luxury homes in Pittsboro’s Ryan’s Crossing neighborhood they often take time to visit some of the more popular spots in Chatham County. Jordan Lake State Park is a favorite for those who thrive on the water. Carolina Tiger Rescue is a must-do for both residents and visitors. The area’s museum scene is extraordinary and provides multiple cultural options. While these and other favorites are top of mind when thinking of Chatham County, there are also a variety of hidden gems waiting to be explored.
What are some of our favorite Chatham County hidden gems?
American Tobacco Trail: The Triangle Rails-to-Trails project began in 1989 to preserve abandoned railroad corridors by turning them into beautiful recreational trails. With over 22 miles of trails, the American Tobacco Trail crosses through four central North Carolina counties, including Pittsboro’s Chatham County. Walkers, bikers, runners, and hikers all enjoy discovering new spots or visiting familiar spans along the trail.
Bynum Bridge: The area around Bynum Bridge is a paradise for bird lovers but it’s the historic steel truss bridge that brings most visitors. Built in the 1920s, the bridge spans over 800 feet across the Haw River, offering breathtaking views. Pedestrians have enjoyed the bridge without the worry of traffic since 1999 while others enjoy the view upward from kayaks or canoes.
Carolina Sunshine Alpaca Farm: With boutique farms stealing the show on many social media sites, it is no surprise that Pittsboro’s amazing alpaca farm is a popular place to visit. Owners Danette Boezio and Em Stecker have created a family-friendly farm filled with learning, fun, and shopping. Why not host your next part among the alpacas? Local farmers benefit from Carolina Sunshine’s infamous PacaPu–a terrific “locally made” fertilizer. Visit the farm Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm.
Fair Game Beverage: The Tasting Room at Fair Game Beverage is open daily allowing visitors to sample North Carolina ciders or craft beers. If it’s time to stock your pantry, Fair Game Beverage has plenty of options from pickles to sauces to crackers to peanuts. Come and find a new favorite beverage, then buy a few bottles to enjoy at home with the perfect snack.
North Carolina Railway Museum: If you have a train lover in your home, this is not to be missed! This volunteer-operated gem is home to the “Triangle’s Train” which travels along a historic railroad track from Bonal to New Hill and back. NCRM’s mission is to preserve and share the state’s railroad history with the public.
The Plant: With nearly twenty acres filled with local vendors, The Plant combines relaxation with diversity and has become known as Pittsboro’s Perfect Spot to Hangout. With a focus on small businesses, The Plant is home to artisans selling art, craft brews, farm-to-fork treats, hemp clothing, and more. Need some native options for a new garden? The Plant has a variety of plants ready to find their new home.
Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival: Each October, the Shakori Hills Community Arts Center partners with the GrassRoots Festival Organization to provide a fabulous celebration of music, dance, art, and more. This multi-day event will be held October 3-6, 2024, and tickets are already on sale! Many attendees opt to pitch tents and make it a memory-filled weekend of camping with friends or family.
